Writing Requirement
(For Students who entered as freshmen prior to Fall 2006, and Transfer Students who entered prior to Fall 2008)

Every undergraduate student who entered as a freshman prior to Fall 2006, or transfer student who entered prior to Fall 2008, is required to successfully complete a writing intensive course, for a grade (cannot take as Pass/NoCredit), as part of the requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree.

There are several ways to satisfy the requirement:

  • Complete a course designated within the current academic year catalog as Writing Intensive.

  • Achieve an AP English score of at least four
  • Achieve an SAT Verbal score of at least 670
  • Transfer a course from another university which has been approved as meeting Rensselaer’s requirements for a writing intensive course

Note: Students with an SAT verbal score of less than 610 are strongly advised to satisfy the requirement by taking a writing course.
